The Secretary of the Navy has announced the commissioning of PCU California (SSN 781). The eighth in the Virginia class submarine is scheduled to be commissioned in Hampton Roads in October 2011. Construction began in December 2006 with the keel laying on May 1, 2009.  She was christened on November 6, 2010 by the sponsor Donna Willard, wife of Admiral Robert F. Willard, USN.
